This implies that fort areas near the surface are either built 1 extra Z-level below the surface, or get floored over on top with constructed floors or other such protective constructions. Therefore, all secure fort areas must have a tile above them that is not suitable for growing trees something like a wall, ramp, upward staircase, or constructed floor. Besides decreasing the supply of forestable land, this poses a problem for defense. If a tree grows on a tile with a mined-out tile (anything other than a wall or fortification) underneath, chopping down the tree creates a hole where it stood. Therefore, my fort should be designed so that all possible entrances from both the surface and the caverns go through staircases with floor hatches on the top. Secure defense relies on one fundamental principle: Building destroyers cannot destroy floor hatches from below as long as there is no other path to the top of the floor hatch.I don't have screenshots offhand, but I can describe my typical plan for a fort: Kitfox Discord #modding-discussion channelīronzemurder and Oilfurnace (illustrated) A three step guide:ĭownload DF Classic or install the premium version from Steam or Itch.ioįollow the quickstart guide on the wiki, or see other learning resources (below)Īsk any questions in the ☼Bi-weekly DF Questions Thread☼ - it's always active See the reasons for our rules here, and please report any problems!ĭF can be intimidating, but we're dedicated to helping new players.
